Choosing the right position for your camellia is essential. Up here on Skye, they needa reasonably sheltered area with well draining soil and ideally dappled sun or semi shade in the morning when frost is about.. They do not like being waterlogged. Acid soil is preferred. Plant your camellia relatively high, so that the top of the root ball is level with the surface of the soil. This helps water drain away from the trunk. Camellia are shallow rooting, so avoid planting them under shallow-rooted trees such as birch. A light pruning after the spring bloom is advised, just enough to encourage the desired shape.
