Common Alder. A pioneer, which likes damp places such as marshes, riversides, lakesides, and wet woods. Used to be coppiced for the gunpowder industry. A conical tree with glossy dark green leaves. Pendent yellow-brown male catkins open before the leaves. Max Height 25m. Max Spread 10m. Flowers January to March. Full Sun. Hardy.
